A model train set of wheels can be plastic or metal. Understanding the railway wheel model set construction is important when considering that the type of wheel is best for you.

A train wheel consists of a flange and tread. The flange is the inside of the wheel and is deeper (or more) than the other. The tread is the flat part that actually walks the railroad. (Trains Royal has the same type of flange and the tread of manufacture.) Some wheels are mounted on an adjustable shaft, allowing some rotation of the wheels. In fact, this two-part design of the wheel and the shaft is called the set of wheels. Some plastic bogies and some sets of metal wheels sets, while others use a combination of plastic and metal to create a set of wheels.

You may find that some rail cars work better with plastic wheels and other assemblies with metal wheel sets. The main objective is the enjoyment and ease of care for the whole train.
